The blood pressure is taken from an average of two or more blood pressure readings measured at two or more visits after the initial visit. It is based on blood pressure for adults aged 18 and older who are not on treatment for high blood pressure.
Table 1 defines the grades of blood pressure according to its severity. Your doctor must make treatment decisions based on the measured blood pressure and your pre-existing cardiovascular risks if any, for example : diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, etc. The classification of high blood pressure is important. Diastolic blood pressure – the lower number (85 in this example).Systolic pressure – the higher number (130 in this example).
The Blood Pressure measurements are in two readings e.g.
Hypertension is when : BP >140mmHg / > 90mmHg Hypertension is defined as persistent elevation of systolic blood pressure (BP) of 140 mmHg or greater and/or diastolic BP of 90 mmHg or greater.
